Man killed in ‘gunfight’ with police

A suspected drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Kalibari Bylane area in Mymensingh early Sunday, reports UNB

The deceased is Sharifur Rahman Sharif, 32, son of late Nazim Uddin of Krishtopurin in the city.

Being informed that a gang of drug traders gathered in the area to handle drugs, a team of police conducted drive around 1:45am, said Shah Kamal Akand, officer-in-charge of Detective Branch of police.

Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the drug traders hurled brick chips towards police, prompting them to fire back, triggering the gunfight.

After the gunfight, police rescued Sharif with bullet wounds.

Later, the injured was taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where physicians declared him dead.

Two policemen were injured, claimed the official adding that they recovered 100 pieces of yaba tablets and five kilogramme hemp from the spot.

The law enforcement’s versions of the event, however, could not be verified independently as no versions of the incident were available immediately either from any witness or from the victim’s family.
