Students on Saturday held demonstrations at Shahbagh and Karwan Bazar demanding trial of those responsible for the death of Dhaka Residential Model College student Naimul Abrar.

Some leaders and activists of ruling party student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) led the programmes. The banners and festoons of both the programmes were the same.

Ninth-grader Naimul Abrar died from electrocution during the anniversary celebration of Prothom Alo’s youth magazine Kishor Alo on 1 November.

His father Mujibur Rahman sued the Prothom Alo editor and others on 6 November saying that his son died due to the negligence of the organisers.

Students of different educational institutions formed a human chain around 3:30pm in front of National Museum at Shahbagh. They were holding placards demanding ‘Boycott Prothom Alo’ and ‘Boycott Kishor Alo’ and chanting slogans.

Later they came to Karwan Bazar and held the protest programme in front of Prothom Alo office.

They said they were students of different institutions including Tejgaon College.

Second year student of Dhaka University’s political science department Abdullah Khan placed a four-point demand on behalf of the protestors at Karwan Bazar. Their demands include the trial of Abrar murder case at a speedy trial tribunal, banning Prothom Alo and Kishor Alo.

Abdullah Khan also led the human chain at Shahbagh. He is an elected member of DU’s Surya Sen Hall students’ union from BCL panel. DU Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haque hall BCL’s assistant secretary Rabbi Haque and activist Belal Hossain, Patuakhali BCL’s social welfare affairs secretary and Haji Mohammad Mohsin Hall unit activist Adnan Habib Khan, Haji Mohammad Mohsin Hall unit BCL activist Abdullah and Muktijuddha Ziaur Rahman hall unit BCL’s Obaidullah Ridwan participated at both the programmes.

Belal Hossain said, “We’re holding a meeting and will declare a fresh programme.”
