2 EC officials detained for providing NIDs to Rohingyas

The members of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) on Wednesday arrested two employees of election commission's (EC) local offices as they were reportedly involved in providing National Identity Cards (NIDs) to Rohingya refugees, reports UNB.

The detainees were identified as Abul Khayer Bhuiyan, 45, office assistant of Chattogram district election office and Anowar Hossain, 45,office assistant of Mirsharai election office. 


Rajesh Barua, inspector of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit of CMP said that they have arrested the duo from their work places.

They (arrestees) were shown arrested in a case filed with Kotwali police station, he said.

On 16 September, another office assistant of Chattogram election office along with his two accomplices were also held with laptop over the matter.

Election commission halted the NID distribution as a Rohingya woman was caught with fake NID at the Chattogram passport office in August.
