Three companies of the Transcom Group have been given tax cards again this year.

Of the four print and media organisations awarded with the tax cards, three belong to the Transcom Group. These are Mediastar Ltd, Transcraft Ltd and Mediaworld Ltd.

The awards were handed over to the top executives of these organisations at an event held at Radisson Hotel in the capital city on Saturday.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) every year hands out tax cards to the best taxpayers of different categories in recognition of their contribution. Finance minister AHM Mustafa Kamal was chief guest on the occasion.

Mediastar Ltd was awarded as the highest taxpayer in the print and electronic media category.

Chairperson of Mediaworld and former advisor to the caretaker government Rokeya Afzal Rahman accepted the crest and tax card on behalf of the organisation. Prothom Alo editor Matiur Rahman received the crest and card on behalf of Mediastar. On behalf of Transcraft, the award was accepted by Transcom executive director (finance) Kamrul Hasan.

The three organisations received the award last year too. Prothom Alo is brought out by Mediastar and The Daily Star by Mediaworld. Both the dailies are printed by Transcraft.

The other media organisation among the four receiving the award was Eastwest Media Group Ltd which publishes Bangladesh Protidin, Kaler Kantha and Daily Sun.

Director of Transcom Group, Shahnaz Rahman, was recognised as the highest woman taxpayer in the Dhaka City Corporation zone. Transcom executive director (finance) Kamrul Hasan accepted the award on her behalf.

In 2017 NBR bestowed the title Kar Bahadur (Tax Hero) on 84 families who have been paying taxes for an extended period of time. Transcom Group chairman Latifur Rahman and his family were given this title at the time.

Prothom Alo editor Matiur Rahman and The Daily Star editor Mahfuz Anam this year again received awards as the highest taxpayers in the journalist category. This is the fourth time they received the awards.

Five eminent journalists were also awarded in this category. Mahfuz Anam topped the list, followed by Mohammed Abdul Malek, editor of the daily Azadi published from Chattogram. They were followed by Prothom Alo’s Matiur Rahman, Channel i director (news) Shaikh Siraj and senior journalist Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul.

In total, 76 taxpayers of different categories were awarded, along with 67 organisations.

Those receiving the tax cards will be able to avail various facilities such as use of the VIP lounge at the airport, priority booking at all hotels including five-star ones.

The tax card holder, spouse and dependent offspring will be given priority for cabins in government hospitals, priority in purchasing air, railway and river transport tickets, as well as invitations to national, city corporation, pourashava and local government programmes. The validity of the tax card is one year.
