‘Not only onion’s, prices of all essential commodities soaring’

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday alleged that the prices of onion and other essentials have shot up due to the 'government's corruption, incompetence and foul play by ruling party-backed business syndicates', reports UNB. 

"The prices of all essentials, not only that of onion, have marked a sharp raise and gone beyond people's buying capacity," he said.

The BNP leader came up with the remarks while talking to reporters after offering fathea at the grave of great national leader Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani at Tangail’s Santosh, marking his 43rd death anniversary.

He said the framers did not get the fair prices of their crops, including paddy. "The government has completely failed to run the state. That's why it's unable to control anything."

Fakhrul said the government has no responsibility to people since it was 'not elected' by their votes. "The government has imposed an autocratic rule in the country by destroying democracy and snatching people's rights."

He called upon the people of all walks of life to get united being imbued with the ideals of Moulana Bhasani to remove the current 'undemocratic government'.

The BNP leader alleged that the government kept BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia in jail by convicting her in 'false' cases out of political 'vengeance'.

He said BNP has been on a movement against the 'autocratic' government to free Khaleda from jail. "We believe the government will be forced to release our leader (Khaleda) in the face of a united movement of people."

A BNP delegation, led by Fakhrul, went to Santosh around 12:00pm and placed a wreath at the grave of Bhasani.

The 43rd death anniversary of Bhasani was observed amid various programmes.

Different organisations, including Bangladesh National Awami Party (NAP Bhasani), BNP, Awami League, Jatiya Party, Krishak Sramik Janata League, Moulana Bhasani University of Science and Technology, Bhasani Foundation and Shaheed Asad Parisad and other organisations observed by placing wreaths at his mazar, holding discussions and arranging doa and milad mahfils, art competition and poetry recitation.

Bhasani, popularly known as 'Majlum Jananeta', the leader of the downtrodden, passed away on 17 November, 1976.
