AL leader cancels exams to organise feast at school

A campus shared by three schools in Narayanganj was taken over by a leader of the ruling Awami League, who happened to be the president of one of the school’s governing body, and cancelled all academic activities including annual exams to organise a feast and doa mahfil on Saturday.

Yasin Mia, general secretary of Siddhirganj thana unit Awami League and president of the governing body of Mijmiji Poshchimpara High School, organised the day-long feast for 3,000 people, leading to resentment among the guardians at the disruption of educational activities.

One of the two other schools on the campus, the Poshchimpara Kindergarten School, went ahead with the exams as scheduled.

However, the examinees informed that they could not sit for the exams satisfactorily due to the hue and cry created by the local AL rank-and-file thronging the campus.

The third school on the campus, the Poshchimpara Government Primary School, held regular classes on Saturday.

The examinations scheduled for sixth, seventh and ninth graders for Saturday at Mijmiji Poshchimpara High School have been shifted to 12 December. Teachers taking regular classes received only verbal instructions from Yasin Mia’s minions to wrap things up, which they did quickly and declared school holiday.

Some of the guardians of the students of Mijmiji Poshchimpara High School expressed their disbelief at Yasin Miah disrupting exams in a school under his leadership in favour of an essentially personal programme.

Several leaders informed that Yasin Mia organised the feast with an eye on the upcoming council of Siddhirganj thana Awami League, where he hopes to retain the powerful general secretary post.

When asked, Yasin pointed to the invitation letter, signed by him, where it states that the doa mahfil was organised in memory of his late parents along with the AL leaders who had passed away.
