Chattogram AL council begins amid chaos, clash

Awami League activists -- said to be the followers of two general secretary post aspirants of Chattogram Uttar unit of the party -- locked into a scuffle just before the beginning of its triennial council on Saturday, reports UNB. 


Witnesses said when followers of Uttar zila AL vice president Gias Uddin took position at Laldighi ground around 9:45 am, their counterparts -- followers of general secretary post aspirant Ataur Rahman -- also appeared there in a procession.

At one stage, the two rival groups locked into a scuffle and started throwing chairs at each other, creating a chaotic situation at the venue, they added.

Kotwali police officer-in-charge Md Mohsin said a chase and counter-chase took place between the two groups in the morning but they brought the situation under control.

The activists vandalised some chairs, the OC added.

The council was inaugurated around 11am. AL general secretary Obaidul Quader was present as the chief guest.

AL joint general secretary (central) Mahbubul Alam Hanif, organising secretary Enamul Haque Shamim and deputy minister for education Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Naoufel, deputy publicity secretary Aminul Islam Amin, deputy office secretary Biplob Barua, central leader Abdul Matin Khashru, Chattogram zila parishad chairman MA Salam, local leaders and members of parliament were present.
