AL picks Moslem for Chattogram-8 by-polls

Awami League’s Chattogram south district unit president Moslem Uddin Ahmed has been picked for contesting the Chattogram-8 by-election on the party ticket, reports UNB.

The decision came from a meeting of Awami League nomination board held at the prime minister's official residence Ganabhaban on Monday with prime minister and AL president Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

The by-election to the parliamentary seat (Boalkhali) which fell vacant following the death of Moin Uddin Khan Badal will be held on 13 January next.

As per the schedule, the deadline for the submission of nomination paper is 12 December, while the date for scrutinising the nomination papers is 15 December and the last date for the withdrawal of candidacy is 22 December.

In the election, the balloting will he held through electronic voting machines (EVMs) from 9:00am to 5:00pm without any break.

The Chattogram-8 constituency is comprised of five wards (ward No 3-7) of Chattogram City Corporation and Boalkhali upazila except Sripur and Kharandip unions.

There are some 475,996 voters in the constituency.

Moin Uddin Khan Badal, the executive president of a faction of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, was elected MP with Awami League’s symbol 'boat' in the last general election.

He died at a hospital in Bangalore, India on 7 November at the age of 67.
