The ninth national council of Jatiya Party (JaPa) kicked off at the Engineers Institute in the capital on Saturday morning.

JaPa founding chairman HM Ershad’s widow Raushan Ershad, who will be made chief patron, a new post the party created for her, did not join the council until 12:00pm.

Current chairman GM Quader will remain as the head of that party.

The council began at 10:00am.

UNB adds: as chief patron, Raushan, currently serving as the party's senior co-chairman, will remain above the chairman.

"She will be given the highest honour in the party, and at its meetings or general meetings,” secretary general Moshiur Rahman Ranga told newsmen.

Quoting the party chairman, Ranga said Raushan will hold the highest position in the party as long as she is alive.

However, the Jatiya Party chairman will enjoy the highest power in the party.
