The government will procure 20 sweeping trucks to reduce the air pollution in the capital, said LGRD and cooperatives minister Md Tazul Islam on Saturday.

He said this while speaking at the installation ceremony of City Development Journalists’ Forum, Bangladesh at the Cirdap auditorium, reports UNB.

The minister said the government has taken steps to cut the air pollution of the city. “A committee was formed at an inter-ministerial meeting recently. Twenty sweeping trucks will be brought as per the recommendations of the committee to settle the dust swirling in the city.”

He said Dhaka was built in an unplanned way. “Various utility services, including power, water and gas lines, were not installed thinking about the future.”

Talking about the river pollution, Tazul said the prime minister has formed a committee, headed by him, to prevent the pollution. “We’ve already devised the master plan. We’ll start work very soon.”

Speaking on the occasion, Dhaka North City Corporation mayor Atiqul Islam said work to build a smart city has started.

About late DNCC mayor Annisul Huq’s initiative to build 11 U-loops, he said the LGRD ministry has already approved the project. “Work on two has already completed while the construction of the third one is underway in the Airport area. The rest will be built gradually.”
