BCL leader arrested allegedly for raping woman

Police arrested a local leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) from Bakalia of Chattogram city on Monday for allegedly raping a woman repeatedly with a promise of marriage, reports UNB.

BCL is the student wing of ruling Awami League.

The arrestee is Akibul Islam, 33, organising secretary of Chattogram South district unit of BCL and son of Nurul Absar. Hailing from Haildhar union in Anwara upazila, he used to live in Bakalia of the city.

Nezam Uddin, officer-in-charge of Bakalia police station, said police arrested Akibul in the afternoon after the victim filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act on Sunday.

According to the case statement, Akibul got acquainted with the woman, 35, a mother of two, through Facebook and developed a love affair introducing him as an assistant superintendent of police (ASP).

He took her to residential hotels several times with a promise of marriage and raped her, it read.

The BCL leader also took money from her to buy a motorcycle, an iPhone and other things, according to the case statement.

Contacted, president of the BCL unit Borhanuddin said they sent a letter to the central committee recommending that he be expelled from the organisation.
