The suspect believed to have raped a female student of Dhaka University at the capital's Kurmitola area described how the victim fell prey to his attack on Sunday evening, said the officials of Rapic Action Battalion.

Quoting the accused Majnu, RAB said he was walking along the road on 5 January after undergoing treatment at Kurmitola General Hospital in the evening when he saw the girl going down the road. She was carrying a backpack.

He grabbed her from behind and dragged her to a bush nearby where he punched her and threatened to choke her to death.

At that stage the girl became weak and passed out, the rapist recounted.

She finally managed to escape after gaining consciousness, he said.

According to RAB, the vicitim ran across the street but could not cross the road due to the divider. She could have been run over and killed.

She then took the footover bridge to cross the road and got into a rickshaw.

Majnu had snatched her cell phone, sold it to a woman and then left Dhaka for Narsingdi. He later returned to Dhaka.

The elite force arrested him from Tongi in Gazipur on Tuesday night. Majnu was handed over to investigating Detective Branch (DB) police on Wednesday.

Deputy commissioner of DB police Mashiur Rahman told Prothom Alo that they soon will start the investigation.

"The investigation may need some tests to be done. If necessary, the accused will be placed in a line-up for identification," he added.

According to the case statement, the student on Sunday set out on a university bus at 5:40pm from the campus to go to her friend’s house in Shewra in the capital.

The bus stopped in Kurmitola at 7:00pm and the student started walking towards Shewra.

The statement also said the rapist snatched her bag, Tk 2,000 and her cell phone.
