‘BCL men’ beat 4 DU students suspected of Shibir link

Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men on Tuesday night allegedly beaten up four students of Dhaka University (DU) suspecting them of being involved with the politics of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, reports UNB.

The victims are Sanwar Hossain, a 3rd year student of political science department; Md Mukim Chowdhury, a 2nd year student of tourism and hospitality management department; Minhaz Uddin, a 2nd year student of islamic history and culture department; and Afsar Uddin, a 2nd year student of arabic department.

Campus sources said BCL leaders and activists called the four students to the guest room of Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall on Tuesday night and tortured them from 11:00pm till 1:00am on Wednesday suspecting their link to Shibir.

Later, the victims were handed over to Shahbagh police station around 3:00am.

Meanwhile, police released them on Wednesday afternoon after primary investigation.

DU unit BCL general secretary Saddam Hussain said he heard about the incident. "We don't support this type of assault on anyone."

Meanwhile, the injured students told reporters that they have no link with Shibir.

DU proctor AKM Golam Rabbani said on information, members of the proctorial body went to the hall and rescued the students. The proctorial team then handed them over to police.

Meanwhile, Santrash Birodhi Chhatra Oikya, an alliance of 12 student organisations, held a protest rally on the campus protesting the incident and demanded immediate punishment of those responsible for it.
