An unidentified Rohingya man was killed in what Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members called a gunfight with them in Teknaf upazila on Friday.

Faisal Hasan Khan, commanding officer of Teknaf BGB-2, said they had been tipped off about a yaba smuggling bid.

“One of our teams took position at Jadimora mosque area in the upazila around 5:00am. Some people, carrying sacks, opened fire on BGB as soon as they saw the border guards,” he said.

After a skirmish, BGB found an unidentified man injured with gunshot wounds at the spot, he added saying that the man taken to the Teknaf Health Complex.

“Physicians there gave him first aid and recommended shifting him to the Sadar Hospital for better treatment,” Faisal said. “The man succumbed to his injuries at the district hospital.”

BGB members claimed that they had recovered a locally-made gun, bullet and 130,000 yaba pills from the spot.
