Mother, son among 3 killed in road accident

Three people were killed and eight others injured in a road accident at Amtali-Kuakata intersection in Barguna on Saturday morning.

The deceased were identified as Nupur Begum, 30, her son Nishat, 10, and niece Lamia, 15.

Witnesses said the driver of a Mayer Doa Paribahan bus fled leaving the vehicle's engine running after crashing into a microbus at Amtali. The fast moving driver-less vehicle hit two auto-rickshaws leaving three killed on the spot and injuring several pedestrians.

All of the deceased were passengers of an auto-rickshaw, said Md. Abul Bashar, officer-in-charge of Amtali police station.

Additional police super Syed Rabiul visited the spot.

Nupur was returning home from Gazipur Bandar, Patuakhali, said her sister Baby Akhter.

Law enforcement sent the bodies to a Barguna hospital morgue and seized the bus, police said.

Police was reportedly taking preparations to file a case in connection with the accident.

Road accidents are common in Bangladesh killing thousands of people every year.

According to Jatri Kalyan Samity, a passengers’ welfare platform, some 7,855 people were killed in 5,516 road accidents in 2019 while 13,330 peole sustained injuries.
