The High Court (HC) on Monday extended the bail for a year in two defamation cases filed against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, reports UNB.

The bench of justice Muhammad Abdul Hafiz and justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo passed the order after hearing on two petitions.

Lawyer Kaysar Kamal stood for the petitioner accompanied with  Kamruzzaman Mamun and Salma Sultana Soma.

On 18 June, the HC granted six-month bail to Khaleda in the cases and the bail tenure expired in November.

One defamation case was filed against her for hurting religious sentiment in 2014 while another in 2016 for making derogatory remarks against Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Khaleda has been in jail since she was convicted in Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case in 8 February, 2018. She was found guilty in another corruption case later the same year.
