Bangladesh urged Qatar to recruit more people and increase investment.

The request was made at a bilateral meeting between state ministers of two countries in Dhaka on Monday.

Bangladesh state minister for foreign affairs Shahriar Alam met with his Qatari counterpart Soltan bin Saad Al-Muraikhi at the state guesthouse Meghna.

Speaking to newsmen after the meeting, Shahariar Alam said, “There are about 350,000 expatriate Bangladeshis in Qatar. We have discussed a possible new sector in which more Bangladeshis can be sent. They have fresh demand ahead of FIFA World Cup in 2022. The expatriates’ welfare and overseas employment ministry will strongly work in this regard.”

He said they have focused on increasing trade and investment as Qatar has adequate funds to invest in Bangladesh.

UNB adds: Highlighting investment-friendly environment in the country, the state minister discussed how a mechanism can be established to attract more investment in various ways, including through Qatar Fund for Development.

Shahriar Alam also discussed the signing of a number of MoUs between the two countries in the coming months, including one on avoidance of double taxation.

The two countries also discussed cooperation in international forums under the UN.

Foreign secretary Masud Bin Momen and senior officials from both sides attended the meeting.
