Man killed in gunfight: Police

A man was killed in a what the police called gunfight with them at Bagoan village in Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia early Wednesday, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Shahidul Islam alias Shahid, 34, from Jamalpur village in the upazila. Police said he was wanted in 14 criminal cases.

SM Arifur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Daulatpur police station, said they conducted a drive in the area around 3:00am acting on a tip-off.

Criminals opened fire as soon as the police team reached the spot, triggering a gun battle.

At one stage, Shahid suffered gunshot wounds. Later, police took him to a local hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.

A pistol, two bullets and 50 bottles of Phensedyl were recovered from the spot.

According to the human rights body Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), at least 421 people were killed in 2018 while 370 killed in 2019 in such gunfight, crossfire and shootouts with different law enforcement agencies.

At least 21 people were killed in gunfights, shootouts and crossfires in the first month 2020, ASK said on its website.
