Ruling Bangladesh Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader on Tuesday said political leaders and activists are vanguards in protecting the interest of the commoners, reports BSS.

“A real political leader or worker never gets involved in politics being fallen in greed. He or she comes to politics with great ideology and values,” he told a discussion through videoconferencing from his official residence in the capital.

Swechhasebak League arranged the discussion on Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Institution of Diploma Engineers in the city as part of the programme of National Mourning Day.

Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said politics is a mission, not a profession at all.

Although general people remain inactive, political leaders and workers must be active to protect the interest of commoners, he said.

Highlighting the life and works of Bangabandhu, Quader said protesting any unjust act was the instinct of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, which had driven him to join politics.

“Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman joined politics voluntarily. He was a candidate of people’s love. He was a social worker and a patriot too. Loving the Bangalee nation, he did not hesitate to walk gallows,” the AL general secretary said.

Chaired by Swechhasebak League president Nirmal Ranjan Guha and moderated by its general secretary Afzalur Rahman Babu, the discussion was addressed, among others, by AL joint general secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim.

Dhaka University pro-vice chancellor professor ASM Maksud Kamal presented a keynote on Bangabandhu.
