Shibchar apparently under lockdown

  • No social gatherings will take place

  • No public transport will run on the streets

The upazila administration has shut down all types of public transportation and social gatherings in a bid to fight spread of the novel coronavirus in Shibchar upazila of Madaripur.

The government took the decision at a 3-hour meeting at the upazila headquarters on Thursday.

“To contain coronavirus infection, all shops except medicine, vegetables and grocery shops will be under lock and key. But, we haven’t got any direction about a lockdown yet,” said Madaripur deputy commissioner Md Wahidul Islam.

According to the meeting minutes, since 7:00pm on Thursday, all shops except those selling essentials will be shut down. No social gatherings including public meetings, wedding ceremonies, religious and political gathering will take place. No public transport will run on the streets either.

Shibchar upazila nirbahi officer (UNO), who chaired the meeting, said, “At least 664 people returned home from abroad. All of them would be forced to go into quarantine.”
