Jatiya Party secretary general Moshiur Rahman Ranga on Tuesday said their party will never backtrack on a systematic movement to protect the interests of the country and its people, reports UNB.

"Jatiya Party will speak in favour of the people as a strong opposition in parliament, and it won't backtrack on arraying out a systemic movement to protect any interest of the country and nation," he said.

Leader of an alliance partner of ruling Bangladesh Awami League, Ranga further said, "Jatiya Party's role in parliament will demonstrate it doesn't compromise on the interests of the country and people."

He came up with the remarks while announcing the list of Jatiya Party nominated councillor candidates for DNCC by-polls at party chairman's Banani office in the capital city.

Ranga urged party leaders and activists to put in united efforts to ensure the victory of its candidates in the by-polls.

He said their party chairman HM Ershad, who is receiving treatment in Singapore, is improving gradually. "He'll return home very soon, and play the role of the opposition leader in parliament."

Ranga said they will announce the name of their party's mayoral candidate later in consultation with Ershad.

The by-elections to the vacant DNCC mayoral post will be held on 28 February.

Besides, the by-polls to councillor posts of 36 new wards --18 in DNCC and 18 in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) -- will be held on the same day.

According to DNCC election schedule, the last date for the submission of nomination is 30 January while the scrutiny will be held on 2 February and the last date for the withdrawal of nomination is 9 February.
