The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) on Saturday requested all of its members not to retrench any worker in the current month.

“BGMEA has requested all its members not to retrench any worker in the month of May,” said a press release issued by the association.

It also revealed that Industrial Bangladesh Council (IBC) and Trade Union Centre (TUC) came to an agreement for providing 60 per cent gross salaries to the workers who didn’t work in April.

Another five per cent will be adjusted with the salaries of the running month, the release said adding that those who worked during the holidays will be provided with full salaries.

Earlier, the government had announced a Tk 50 billion fund to help the readymade garment factory owners to pay wages and allowances to their workers in an effort to avoid layoffs during the general holiday.

The commercial banks, which will apply for the loans from the stimulus package, can take maximum 2 per cent service charges.
