Robi, one of the leading digital service providers of the country, inaugurated a pure water drinking plant at the Cumilla railway station on Saturday.

The plant is capable of supplying 5,000 litres of pure drinking water daily, said a Robi press release issued on Saturday.

The plant has separate places for men and women and people with special needs to access this facility. Besides, separate facilities are also there to help people perform ablution for saying prayers.

With technical assistance from Water Aid, water will be purified using Membrane and UV filter. The quality of water at the plant will be ensured through periodic testing in the recognised laboratories like BUET, CUET, KUET, SUST and PWD.

This initiative was taken up under Robi’s corporate social responsibility programme titled, “Nirapod Pani, Shustho Jibon”.

The project designed to contribute towards the national drive to meet the target of Sustainable Development Goal-6: Clean Water and Sanitation.

Cumilla-6 MP AKM Bhauddin Bahar inaugurated the water plant as the chief guest. He thanked Robi for being part of the national drive to meet the SDGs through their CSR initiative.

Cumilla city corporation’s panel mayor Jamiruddin Khan Jampi, Cumilla upazilla chairman advocate Aminul Islam, Divisional Manager of Bangladesh Railway (East) Md. Jahangir Hossain, Jagroto Manobikota general secretary Tahsin Bahar Shuchona were present on the occasion as special guests.

Robi’s managing director and CEO Mahtab Uddin Ahmed, head of corporate and regulatory Shahed Alam, cluster market director Md Mehedi Hasan, regional manager (Cumilla) Md Iftakharul Alam along with other high officials of the company were also present here.

Water Aid Bangladesh’s director (programmes and policy advocacy) Liakath Ali was also present at the programme.

“Availability of pure drinking water in public places is a major concern for the travellers in the country. In order to address this problem, we have started setting up water treatment plants from 2010 with kind support from Bangladesh Railway and Water Aid Bangladesh,” Robi CEO Mahtab Uddin Ahmed said.

“I can proudly say that this Corporate Responsibility initiative of ours is supporting thousands of commuters of Bangladesh Railway round the clock.”

Including the water plant at Cumilla railway station, Robi has so far set-up pure drinking water facility in nine major railway stations in the country.

The eight other water plants are located at Kamalapur, Dhaka Airport, Chattogram, Khulna, Rajshahi, Sylhet, Mymensingh and Mohanganj railway stations.
