GP adjudged fastest mobile network

Ookla, the global leader in internet testing and analysis, has named Grameenphone (GP) the fastest mobile network in Bangladesh for the first half of 2018.

Using modern devices across all major operators in the country, Ookla analysed consumer-initiated tests and its results confirmed Grameenphone’s achievement, said an announcement on Thursday. Download and upload speeds are considered to rank network speed performance.

“This award is a testament to Grameenphone’s exceptional performance, as experienced by their own customers, in Q1 [quarter1] and Q2 [quarter2],” said Jamie Steven, executive vice president at Ookla.

Grameenphone CEO Michael Foley attributed this success to the launch of 4G in Bangladesh, as facilitated by the government and its regulator.

“This has led a material increase in overall network speed and service quality throughout the country,” he said.

In 2018 alone, GP CEO mention, the operator committed more than Tk 40 billion or $500 million to Bangladesh in spectrum, neutrality and capital expenditures, as well as to build even wider coverage.

“We urge the regulator to bring much more spectrum to the market at affordable rates so that together we can ensure the speedy realisation of Digital Bangladesh,” he added.

Grameenphone, part of the Telenor Group, is a leading telecommunications service provider in Bangladesh with more than 68 million subscribers.
