Two thirds of the stipend recipients are female, said the company which runs the scholarship distribution programme for financially disadvantaged and meritorious students.

Twenty one scholarships have been offered to students who received excellent grades in the recently published results of the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations.

Chevron Bangladesh hosted a ceremony to award the students at the premises of its Bibiyana Gas Plant on Saturday.

“I’m confident all your collective efforts will set a model for quality education in greater Sylhet region,” Chevron’s director of policy, government and public affairs Ismail Chowdhury said appreciating the students for their hard work and the faculty, parents and guardians for their support.

Chevron started the scholarship programme with only five educational institutions more than 12 years ago.

Head teacher of Nadampur High School Pradip Ranjan Das expressed gratitude to the company, and said, “We’re privileged to be Chevron’s neighbour and have always found you ready to deliver valuable support to the doorsteps of our community.”

Chevron also provides support in the form of additional teaching, computer labs, coaching support and endowment fund for selected schools, school uniforms, sports equipment, furniture and sanitation facilities, according to the release.

The company’s health, environment and safety director Ashiq Rahman, Bibiyana gas plant superintendent, Bryan Mitisek, senior staffers from the Bibiyana gas plant and students, guardians, chairmen of four school management committees, and senior faculty of four Chevron-supported schools, were present there among others.
