Specialised fish market opened in Jatrabari

Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC) on Thursday launched the country's first specialised government fish market in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area, report UNB and BSS.

Its aim is to ensure marketing and sales of fish in hygienic environment in megacity Dhaka that is faced with a variety of public health hazards.

The market, the six-storied fisheries centre, has been constructed at a cost of Tk 7.3.9 million under a project titled Fish Marketing Facilities Installation, according to an official handout.

There are 183 rooms, including 61 storage rooms, a bank and a restaurant in the specialised market styled "Dhaka Metropolitan Fish Marketing Facility Centre".

The fisheries project aims to ensure unloading, marketing and sales of fish in hygienic environment in the city and supply of formalin-free fish for the city dwellers.

State minister for fisheries and livestock Narayan Chandra Chanda inaugurated the market. BFDC chairman Dildar Ahmed chaired the programme, attended, among others, by Habibur Rahman Molla MP and fisheries and livestock secretary M Maksudul Hasan Khan.

The authorities are hoping to earn annually Tk 8 million from the fish traders as rent, said an official release.

BFDC took the initiative to launch the specialised fish market in the city to ensure proper marketing facilities for the fish traders.
