The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) incurred the highest loss of Tk 102.71 billion among 49 state-owned enterprises (SOEs) until 30 April of the outgoing 2018-19 fiscal, according to the Bangladesh Economic Survey (BES) 2019.

Thirteen other SOEs suffered a loss of Tk 130.68 billion during the period against their losses of Tk 113.66 billion in the 2017-18 fiscal, which means the losses of these SOEs have gone up by Tk 17.01 billion, the BES data shows.

The BES reveals that the amount of loss incurred by the PDB in the last fiscal year was Tk 92.84 billion. The loss counted by the Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) has declined to Tk 599 million as the amount was Tk 955.2 million in the 2017-18 fiscal.

The amount of loss suffered by the Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC) is Tk 9.82 billion against its last year's loss of Tk 8.33 billion while that of Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) is Tk 9.11 billion which was Tk 5.55 billion in the last fiscal year.

Besides, the Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) incurred a loss of Tk 6.95 billion against Tk 4.97 billion of the last fiscal year.

The accumulated amount of losses suffered by eight other SOEs during the outgoing fiscal year is around Tk 1 billion.

On the other hand, the amount of profit made by the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) is on the wane as it stands at Tk 19.44 billion this time against Tk 56.44 billion in the last fiscal year.

The amount of profit made by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) is expected to be Tk 25.48 billion against Tk 62.63 billion in 2017-18 fiscal year, the BSE shows.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) is set to make a profit of Tk 3.58 billion in the current fiscal against Tk 6.90 billion in the last fiscal year.

The profit by the Rural Electrification Board (REB) and Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) has marked a rise compared to the previous fiscal year as REB's profit is going to be Tk 5.92 billion in this fiscal against Tk 3.51 billion in the last fiscal year.

The BSE data reveals that RAJUK will make a profit Tk 4.88 billion in the ongoing fiscal year against Tk 4.16 billion in the last fiscal.

As per the BES data, the total loss of the 49 SOEs has increased because of PDB's loss of Tk 102.71 billion. In the 2017-18 fiscal, they earned Tk 51.72 billion while their earnings in the outgoing fiscal year as of 30 April are Tk 40.32 billion.

In 2012-13 FY, as per the BSE statistics, the SOEs were in loss as they incurred a loss of Tk 26.04 billion.

However, the SOEs had been making profit since 2013-14 fiscal. In the 2015-16 fiscal, the profit earned by the SOEs was Tk 108.88 billion, a record in Bangladesh's history.

But the profit in the following fiscal came down to Tk 93.08 billion and slumped to Tk 51.72 billion in the 2017-18 fiscal.
