Soaring prices accelerate Bangladesh inflation by 5.54pc in September. Prothom Alo file photoBangladesh's annual inflation accelerated in September, fuelled by soaring prices of both food and non-food items, the statistics office said on Thursday.

Consumer prices in September rose 5.54 per cent from a year earlier, accelerating from a rise of 5.49 per cent in the previous month.

Food prices in September were 5.3 per cent higher than a year earlier, and higher than 5.27 per cent in August, as prices of onions, garlic, ginger, fish, vegetables and other items rose.

The non-food inflation rate in September picked up to 5.92 per cent from 5.82 per cent the previous month.

The government aims to contain inflation to 5.5 per cent in the financial year that will end in June 2020.

The central bank has kept policy interest rates unchanged since April 2018.
