Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation is seeking to import 100,000 tonnes of sugar in a tender to secure supplies for the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, an official from the state buyer said on Wednesday.

The last date of submission of offers is 14 March, the official at the state-owned Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation said.

Bangladesh has also moved to import essential items and build reserves before Ramadan starts late in April, when higher demand for those items traditionally pushes up prices.

The south Asian country largely depends on imported sugar to meet its annual demand of 1.4 million tonnes. Private refiners import raw sugar mostly from Brazil.
