Prominent playwright, actor and director professor Momtazuddin Ahmed died at a hospital in city on Sunday.

He was 84.

According to UNB, the renowned playwright breathed his last around 3:48pm while undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospitals, said his nephew Shahriar Mahmud Prince.

Professor Momtazuddin was admitted to the hospital on 20 October after his asthmatic problem worsened.

Born in 1935 in Chapainawabganj, Momtazuddin was directly involved in the Language Movement during his college days at Rajshahi Government College.

On 21 February, 1952 he contributed to erecting the Shaheed Minar at Muslim Hostel of Rajshahi Govt College. He had to go to jail multiple times for his involvement.

Prof Momtazuddin authored a number of plays. Among them 'Ki Chaho Shankhachil' and 'Rajar Anusharer Pala' have been included in the syllabus of Rabindra Bharati University of Kolkata.

He won Ekushey Padak (1997), Bangla Academy Award, Shishu Academy Award and many more in recognition of his contributions to theatre and literature.
