Stern action for releasing wastes into rivers: LGRD minister

LGRD and Cooperatives minister Md Tazul Islam on Saturday said stern action would be taken if any industry releases its wastes into rivers without filtration, reports news agency BSS.

“Industrial, domestic and transport wastes are not allowed to be released into the river at any stage… action will be taken if any industrial enterprise does so in future,” he said.

The minister was exchanging views with the officials of the ministries of shipping and environment and forests, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), deputy commissioners of the district on the bank of the Meghna River and UNO at Araihazar Upazila Parishad auditorium in Narayanganj.

Tazul said necessary measures have been taken to free the Meghna river from pollution and prevent illegal occupation.

Local government division secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed presided over the meeting.

Chief coordinator for Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) affairs in the Prime Minister’s Office Abul Kalam Azad, Nazrul Islam Babu MP, German Ambassador Peter Fahrenholtz and environment and forests secretary Abdullah Al Mohsin Chowdhury were also present, among others, on the occasion.

Later, the minister visited the Dhaka Environmental Sustainable Water Supply Project and Sayedabad Water Treatment Plant Phase-III under the implementation of Dhaka WASA.
