Water level is increasing rapidly in a number of rivers, including Surma, Dhonu, Jadukata, Rokti and Cholti rivers and haors due to incessant rainfall and onrush of water from hilly areas.

Ranjan Kumar Das, sub divisional engineer of Water Development Board (WDB) in Sunamganj, said the water level of Surma river was flowing 48 cm above danger level at Shologhar point on Tuesday morning.

Around 38mm rainfall was recorded in last 24 hours in Sunamganj, he added.

Floods might hit the area if the situation worsens further, said the WBD official.
