The World Car Free Day 2018 is being observed on Saturday in the country like elsewhere in the world, reports UNB.

President Abdul Hamid and prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday issued separate messages on the eve of the day and wished the day's programmes a success.

Marking the day, Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority in association with some government and non-government organisations will organise a programme at the city's Manik Mia Avenue with a theme "Go car free and choose your ride: walk, bike or take bus".

This event will feature different fun activities including drawing competition, cycling, games and a discussion session with special guests.

The day is a free international event celebrated on 22 September which formally started in the 70's in Europe to sensitize citizen to avoid using private cars and encourage cycling, walking or using public transport instead.

The day is being celebrated as a private day since 2006. For the first time, it was observed jointly by the government and non-government organisations in Bangladesh in 2016.
