Dolphin killed in Chattogram

Local administration recovered the hanging body of a dolphin, an endangered mammal, from Golabariasea embankment area in Sitakundu upazila of Chattogram on Saturday night, reports UNB.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Milton Roy said on information they recovered the body of the dolphin which was hanged for collecting oil from it.

Quoting locals the UNO further said greedy people might have killed the dolphin only to collect oil.

He said that they are collecting information about those involved in the crime and instructed upazila fisheries officer to file a case under section 41 and 42 of the Bangladesh Biodiversity Act, 2017.

Upazila Biodiversity Management and Supervision Committee has been instructed to remain watchful so that no such incident can take place again, the UNO added.

According to the law, if anyone kills a dolphin, he will be fined Tk 300,000 with three years' imprisonment. And if anyone does this for the second time he would be jailed for five years with Tk 500,000 fine, he said.

The dolphin was buried.
