A case was filed against a man on Sunday as he reportedly hanged a cat at Madanganj in Bandar, Narayanganj, reports UNB.

Farzana Zaman, head of operation of Animal Lovers of Bangladesh (ALB) Shelter, filed the case against Rabbi Hasan, son of Anwar Hossain of Madanganj, with Bandar police station under the Animal Welfare Act 2019.

According to the case statement, a cat killed some pet pigeons of Rabbi on 12 and 23 October. Outraged, Rabbi hanged the cat and posted the photos and video of the killing on his Facebook account which went viral.

Earlier in the day, ALB executives visited the spot, investigated the matter and then filed the case.

Farzana said cats kill pigeons because it is their basic instinct but when a human being kills an animal that is a punishable offence.

The accused went into hiding but they are trying to arrest him, UNB quoted officer-in-charge of Bandar police station Rafiqul Islam as saying.

Dipanwita Ridi, a young and passionate animal lover, set up the Animal Lovers of Bangladesh (ALB) here. She took the initiative to run the shelter away from the capital to protect them from cruelties. It is now a home to stray cats and dogs.

According to the Animal Welfare Bill 2019, the punishment for killing an animal without an owner is six months in jail and Tk 10,000 in fines.
