How to keep safe from coronavirus

Some ways to reduce risk of virus infection and how to relieve symptoms. AFPThe deadly coronavirus, already spread to 12 countries, has killed more than 80 people in China alone. According to the media reports, cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in France, Japan, United States, Australia, Nepal, Canada, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

The virus, according to the news agency AFP, has infected 2,744 in China as of today (Monday).

Following the widespread infection, World Health Organisation and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP), a leading national public health institute of the United States, recommended some suggestions for the general public to halt transmission and relieve symptoms.

1. Washing hands
As per the WHO, the general public has been asked to ‘clean hands frequently by using alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water’. CDCP suggests to ‘wash hands for at least 20 seconds and if soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.’

2. Evading close contact with sick
The WHO prescription also asked people to ‘avoid close contact with anyone who has fever and cough.’

3. Don’t touch sensitive organs with unwashed hands
CDCP said people must avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. Whenever ones cough or sneeze should cover nose and mouth with a tissue. Once used, should dispose of the used tissue immediately.

4. Avoid direct contact with animals
WHO website reads ‘when visiting live markets in areas currently experiencing cases of novel coronavirus, avoid direct unprotected contact with live animals and surfaces in contact with animals.’

5. Don’t consume undercooked animal products
WHO also asked people not to refrain from consumption of raw or undercooked animal products.

6. Stay home
CDCP suggests to people ‘stay home when one is sick.”
