In Bhutia language the word 'Tso' means ‘lake’ and the 'Mgo' means ‘head’. The hilltop Tsomgo Lake, also known as Changu Lake, means ‘head lake or top lake’. The scenic water body in Sikkim state of India, located at an altitude of 12,310 feet, is one of the most beautiful tourist spots in northeast India.

The hills, the glaciers, the freezing water – all resemple picturesque Switzerland. The pictographic Tsomgo Lake has a combination of surrounding glaciers, hills and chill wind like in the Swiss mountains of the western paradise.

The appearance of the lake changes with changes in nature. The shifting colours of the water in the lake are one of the most attractions. The mystic lake turns into a white glacial plate in winter and in summer it looks a piece of blue sky beneath the feet. The lake is surrounded by high hills. In winter, the valley falls under snow and everything turns glittering white.

It takes just two hours to reach the lake from Gangtok, capital city of Sikkim. It is about 40 kilometres away from Gangtok and some 18 kilometres from Chinese border with India by roads. A zigzag course leads to the destination.

With the falling snow, the winter has come in Tsomgo Lake:
