Faraaz Gold Cup: Gono University to face Southeast in final

Gono University in Savar has reached the final of the United Group Faraaz Inter-university Gold Cup for the first time beating International University Of Business Agriculture & Technology (IUBAT) on Monday.

Gono University beat IUBAT 3-0 in the second semi final at the Bir Sherestha Shaheed Shipahi Mostafa Kamal Stadium in Kamalapur.

Shakhawat Hossain, Ripon Mollah and Ashraful Islam scored apiece for their team.

Gono University would face Southeast University in the final due at 3:30pm on 21 October at Bangabandhu National Stadium.

Gono University missed the chance to take lead in the 22nd minute as Shakhawat Hossain failed to score from a penalty. Adding to their misfortune, striker Afarat Mia was shown red card in 30th minute.

Finally, Shakhawat scored in the 61st minute for Gono University. Ripon and Ashraful scored second and third goals in 68th and 70th minute.

The tournament has been named in memory of Faraaz Ayaaz Hossain, the valiant young man who sacrificed his life for his friends during the militant attack on the Holey Artisan restaurant on 1 July 2016.

Teams from 22 private universities, split into eight groups, are participating in this year’s tournament. The champions will be awarded with the prize money of Tk 300,000 and runner-up team will get Tk 200,000 in addition to trophies.

Ha-Meem Group and Shahjalal Islami Bank are the associate sponsors of the tournament along with United Group.
