Bangladesh’s Ruman Shana has been chosen as the Breakthrough Athlete of 2019 by World Archery Federation for his historic bronze medal at the World Archery Championship in Netherlands last year.

Roman’s bronze gave Bangladesh a direct spot at Tokyo Olympics 2020.

Bangladesh’s German coach Martin Frederick was chosen the Coach of the Year.

“Bangladesh’s Ruman Shana and Martin Frederick were chosen as breakthrough athlete and coach of 2019, following the 24-year-old’s historic bronze medal at the world championships. The podium finish qualified Bangladesh’s first spot to an Olympic Games,” said an article on World Archery Federation website.

The announcement was made ahead of the Indoor Archery World Series Finals on 8 February in Las Vegas, USA, following public and expert votes held throughout January 2020, according to the website.

Earlier Roman Shana was nominated for World Archery’s 2019 Athlete of the Year awards from Recurve Man category.

Hailing from Khulna, Roman is currently ranked 10th in World Archery.

The 24-year-old from Khulna has won many accolades in 2019. In February, he bagged silver medal in the 3rd ISSF World Ranking Championship in Dhaka. After winning the bronze medal in World Archery Championship, Roman secured recurve men’s gold at the third leg of the 2019 Asia Cup in Philippines’ Clark City in September.

Earlier, Roman won an Asia Cup event in 2014.
