The authorities of Dhaka University (DU) on Tuesday decided to bring all of its students under a health insurance scheme during the COVID-19 pandemic, reports news agency UNB.

The decision was taken in Dean’s Committee meeting, chaired by vice chancellor professor Md Akhtaruzzaman at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate building, a DU press release said.

A six-member committee, headed by DU treasurer professor Kamal Uddin, was formed to formulate policies to bring all students under health insurance.

The initiative will also contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) and climb up in world rankings of universities, said the release.

The university has also decided to continue academic activities through online classes during the coronavirus outbreak.

The Dean’s committee asked the departments and institutes to prepare a database for achieving 17 goals and 169 targets of SDG.

The departments and institutes were requested to submit the database by 30 June to DU registrar Enamuzzman.

In late March, the authorities shut the university to prevent the transmission of COVID-19.

Health authorities on Tuesday confirmed the detection of record 2,911 new coronavirus patients in the last 24 hours, raising the total cases to 52,445. Thirty-seven more people died from the virus infections during this period, taking the death tally to 709.
