'Raise age limit for govt job entry to 35'

A parliamentary panel on Wednesday recommended increasing age limit for entering public service to 35 years and retirement age for public servants to 65 years.

Currently, the age limit for entry into government job is 30 years and retirement age is 59 years.

The parliamentary standing committee on public administration ministry made the recommendation at a meeting. The parliament secretariat later issued a press release in this regard.

The recommendation came at a time when students and jobseekers have been demonstrating for some quite some time with the demand for raising the age limit for public service, apart from reforms in quota system.

However, public administration minister Syed Ashraful Islam told parliament on 6 June said the government has no plans at the moment to increase the age limit for the entry into government job.

The parliamentary standing committee recommended cencallation of the existing system of hiring teachers through Non-Government Teachers Registration and Certification Authority (NTRCA) centrally and instead recruit teachers locally through the school managing committees.

The panel said the recruitment process through NTRCA is lengthy and there is scope for irregularities.

The committee members also recommended abolishing viva voca system in the teacher recruitment process.

The committee recommended enlisting educational institutions for monthly pay order in view of size of upazilas and number of unions and educational institutions and the ground situation of schools and colleges.

Teachers and employees of non-government educational institutions have now been demonstrating for bringing their institutes under the MPO system.

Chairman of the standing committee HN Ashiqur Rahman presided over the meeting which was attended by committee members ABM Fazle Karim, Mustafa Lutfullah, RAM Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury, Mohammed Abdullah, and Khorshed Ara Haque.
