An exhibition aiming to increase the awareness on excessive use of antibiotics was held at Rajshahi University (RU) on Monday, reports UNB.

World Linkup, a health related voluntary organisation organised the exhibition on campus to increase awareness about the harmful effects of excessive use of antibiotic among students.

RU pro-vice chancellor professor Ananda Kumar Saha inaugurated the day-long exhibition at the university's Rabindra Arts Building at 9:00am as chief guest.

RU pharmacy department associate professor Md Azizur Rahman, also the convener of the exhibition said that it is now widely known that antibiotic misuse causes it to become ineffective because the infection-causing bacteria become resistant to these drugs - a phenomenon known as antibiotic resistance.

He said that people who take antibiotics over a longer period of time may have an increased risk of death from heart disease and other causes.

World Linkup president Masum Billah said that the excessive use of antibiotics, sometimes, causes fatal diseases. They organised the exhibition to make the students aware about the excessive use of antibiotics, he added.
