A group of Jahangirnagar University teachers on Sunday demanded that the university authorities take steps to stop physical and mental harassment of newcomers in the name of ragging on the campus.
The teachers under the banner of 'Sammilita Shikkhak Samaj' made the demand at a press conference in front of the dean office of Mathematical and Physical Sciences faculty in the afternoon.
The teachers' group convener and JU Teachers' Association (JUTA) president professor Ajit Kumar Majumder said mental and physical torture on freshers by some of their seniors in the name of ragging has become a serious problem at the male dormitories. "Although some hall provosts took initiatives against ragging earlier, they couldn't succeed as the central authorities could not support them."
He also said they had decided that a team formed by teachers will start visiting dormitories at night after the arrival of freshers on the campus.
The teachers' group also denounced the recent clash between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League when various types of firearms were brandished.
Expressing deep concern, teachers' group coordinator professor Zamal Uddin Runu said, "The university authorities didn't take any initiatives to seize arms from dormitories. If it continues, the university will face anarchy in future."
