Sylhet Agricultural University on Thursday rejected the unified policy proposed by the University Grants Commission regarding public university teachers’ appointment and promotion.

The teachers of the university rejected the UGC policy at a press conference held at the agriculture faculty of Sylhet Agricultural University.

Speaking at the news conference, Jitendranath Adhikery, general secretary of Sylhet Agricultural University Teachers Association, said, “the unified policy proposed by the UGC regarding public university teachers’ appointment and promotion is one sided, vengeful, controversial and irrelevant.”

The association has discarded the proposal saying that it was done without including any teacher representative.

“We don’t understand why the draft policy is being put forcibly on all the teachers’ community despite the fact that it was rejected by teachers’ associations of various universities,” it said.

It is a part of a deep-rooted conspiracy to destroy the higher education system, thinks Sylhet Agricultural University Teachers Association.

“It is a sheer dishonour as the status of the teachers was determined by assessing work-hour of the university teachers described in the policy,” the association leaders pointed out adding that “We strongly protest the move.”

They demanded immediate ban on the “black policy” which is being proposed in the name of unified policy guideline. It also demanded to formulate a faultless policy guideline through a committee of teachers accepted by all.

“The association will resist in unison through a movement if any attempt is made to implement such irrelevant measures,” the teachers threatened.

It was mentioned at the press conference that should the teachers’ demands are not met, then teachers of all the public universities would go for tougher movement.
