DU forms probe body over 'irregularities in recruitment'

Dhaka University authorities have formed a three-member probe body over the alleged embezzlement of Tk 2.1 million by some DUCSU and BCL leaders in recruiting some posts of Ruqayyah Hall, said a press release sent on Thursday.

The probe body, headed by Bangla department’s supernumerary professor Begum Akter Kamal, is asked to submit its report within seven working days.

A group of resident students of Ruqayyah Hall on Wednesday brought out allegation that the leaders with the help of the hall provost embezzled Tk 2.1 million through irregularities in recruiting office assistants, gardeners and security guards.

DUCSU Ruqayyah Hall unit vice president (VP) Israt Jahan Tanni and general secretary (GS) Saima Akter, BCL hall unit president BM Lipi Akhter and general secretary Shraboni Disha are involved, the students claimed.

According to their allegation, VP Israt and GS Saima took Tk 800,000 and Tk 500,000 respectively for recruiting two candidates for the posts of office assistant and gardener. Hall unit president Lipi, GS Shraboni and former central BCL leader Ishat Kashfia took Tk 800,000 from an applicant to recruit him for the post of security guard.

Earlier, provost of the hall Zinat Huda told Prothom Alo that a five-member committee headed by her was formed to probe the allegation.

But the students who brought the allegation could not submit any proof to substantiate their allegation, she claimed.

DU authorities asked the hall authorities to suspend the recruitment process although the provost at a press release to the media outlests sent on Wednesday claimed that the recruitment process was done ‘with transparency’.
