10 AUW students receive IDLC-Prothom Alo Trust scholarships

Ten students from Asian University for Women (AUW) have been granted scholarships. Some of them want to be teachers, some want to return to their home towns after finishing studies in the university, some want to open English medium schools for children who lack opportunities, while some want to be social workers.

They all want to devote their lives for the people and society.

These students from various corners of the country have come to prominence fighting against all odds. They are all of the first generation of females in their respective families who have had the chance to study at university.

The Aditiya Prokolpo, a joint venture of Prothom Alo Trust and IDLC Finance Limited, awarded them scholarships at the university auditorium in Chattogram on Tuesday afternoon.

Toma Barma, one of the scholarship recipients, said her father was a tea-garden worker. Her family was poor. The Prothom Alo Trust-IDLC Finance Limited scholarship made her dream to study at university come true. She has a plan to open an English medium school at the tea garden upon completing her studies.

Three winners, Tasnim Akhter, Mohini Afroz and Shaonti Islam, said now they are more confident and self-dependent after getting the Prothom Alo Trust-IDLC Finance Limited scholarship. They have plans to work for the people.

IDLC Finance Limited managing director and chief executive officer Arif Khan said the stories of these students are unbelievable. He also vowed to extend all types help to them.

Speaking at the programme, Prothom Alo editor Matiur Rahman said AUW is the best university in the country for female students. The university began with only 130 students from six countries but now around 900 students from 19 countries are studying here. The cultural exchange among these students is a great achievement, he added.

AUW registrar Dave Dowland highlighted various activities of the university.

Chittagong Independent University vice chancellor Mahfuzul Haque Chowdhury and female entrepreneur Munal Mahbub also addressed the programme.

Three documentaries by AUW, IDLC and Prothom Alo were shown at the programme. Besides, students from Bangladesh, India, Bhutan and Afghanistan took part in cultural programmes.

Prothom Alo Trust has been awarding this scholarship since 2012. With the help of Transcom Group, 42 students got the scholarship until 2016. Since 2017, 26 students got the scholarship with the assistance of IDLC Finance Limited.
