Youth killed 3 hours after arrest

A young man, Selim Mia, 32, was killed in what the police call a gunfight with the law enforcement in Sarail of Brahmanbaria on early Monday.

The police called the youth an inter-district robber ringleader.

Selim Mia, a resident of Sarail upazila’s Sridoba village, was killed in the alleged gunfight around 2:00am early Monday. Police claimed that two police officers and three police constables were injured in the incident.

Sarail police station inspector (investigation) Md Kamruzzaman said the police arrested Selim Mia around 11:00pm Sunday night when a group of robbers led by Selim was preparing for a robbery on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Paschim Kuttapara of Sridoba village in Sarail.

Police said they went with Selim Mia on a drive to recover arms in Sarail upazila’s Bertala area around 1:45am early Monday and around 2:00am, a group of 20-25 robbers launched attack on the police team to snatch away Selim Mia.

According to the police, Selim sustained serious injuries of bullets fired by robbers group.

Police said on-duty doctors declared Selim Mia dead when he was rushed to Brahmanbaria sadar hospital.

Sarail police station officer-in-charge Rupak Kumar Saha told Prothom Alo that a total of four cases including killing ones were filed against Selim Mia with the police station.

Two more cases were filed in connection with the alleged gunfight.
