Ferry services on the two key routes in Paturia-Daulatdia and Shimulia-Kathalbari in the Padma River remained suspended since early Sunday due to dense fog, reports news agency UNB.
In Manikganj, "To avoid any untoward incident, the ferry services on Paturia-Daulatdia route were kept suspended from 4:30 am due to poor visibility caused by heavy fog," said Nasir Mohammad Chowdhury, assistant general manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) at Aricha.
Six ferries remained stuck in the middle of the river while seven others laid anchored at Paturia and three at Daulatdia ghats.
More than 500 vehicles got stranded at both ghats to cross the river.
In Munshiganj, ferry services on the Shimulia-Kathalbari route came to a complete halt from 6 am due to blurred visibility caused by thick fog, said Shah Newaz Khalid, assistant general manager of BIWTC.
Four ferries were stranded with thousands of passengers in the mid-river, causing immense sufferings to passengers amid chilling cold weather.
The ferry services on the busy routes will resume once the visibility returns, said BIWTC officials.
