Angered by deprivation of portfolios in ruling Awami League, a group of former Bangladesh Chharta League (BCL) leaders blasted party general secretary Obaidul Quader.

They staged demonstration near his car in the capital’s Dhanmondi on Sunday.

BCL is the student front of the AL and BCL leaders are generally accommodated in the mainstream organisation once they are not more students.

The agitated ex-BCL leaders came to AL Dhanmondi office for the second day to protest against what they said as the party's decision not to incorporate them assistant secretaries into the party's subcommittees.

Some of them even alleged that the BNP-Jamaat leaders were given assistant secretary posts in the subcommittees instead of considering former BCL leaders who, they felt, deserved position in the party.

Witnesses and the party insiders said when Obaidul Quader reached the office by his car around 7:30pm, the group raised protests and engaged in altercation with him.

In the face of agitation on Saturday, Obaildul Quader said no subcommittee had been declared as yet.

Formation of such subcommittees was kept withheld after party leaders came to know the names through various sources including the social media.

The sub-committees will be announced in the next three months after proper scrutiny, Quader added.

At a press conference earlier, the AL general secretary said he did not face any resentment over formation of the committee. The leaders and activists of the party staged a victory rally, he claimed.

AL office secretary Biplob Barua said the process of constitution of the sub-committees was on but the draft was published on the social media. "So, some Chhatra League leaders came to meet the party general secretary who listened to them," he added.
