The United Nations on Thursday called again for quick implementation of the report of the advisory commission chaired by Kofi Annan to protect Rohingyas and ensure their safe return to Myanmar, reports UNB.

While addressing a discussion programme titled 'Global Compact on Migration and Global Compact on Refugees', UN resident coordinator in Dhaka Mia Seppo also demanded free access to everywhere in Rakhine state.

The programme was jointly organised by the foreign ministry and Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) at the BIISS Auditorium in the capital.

Mentioning that UN has special attention to the Rohingya issue, Mia Seppo said they have constant contact with the UN team in Myanmar and regular exchange of information.

She also said they will support all efforts to take back Rohingyas to their own country.

In his speech, foreign secretary M Shahidul Haque highlighted Bangladesh's efforts in presenting a proposal on the UN Global Compact for Migrants.

He also mentioned Bangladesh's relentless diplomatic efforts in adopting 'New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants'.

The foreign secretary said a big portion of Myanmar's displaced people have taken shelter in Bangladesh and it is a big challenge for the country, seeking more assistance from the world community in this regard.

BIISS director general AKM Abdur Rahman gave the welcome speech at the programme.

Senior officials from different ministries, representatives of embassies in Dhaka, immigration experts and former diplomats took part in the open discussion.
